UN PCFV Lead Campaign page as at 8th March 2021
[Editor’s note: I was stunned to find that practically everything about the PCFV’s role in
eliminating lead paint has been removed from the United Nations website and thus if you
want to know the history, you really need to search for PCFV on The LEAD Groups
www.lead.org.au site, where you will find it 119 times. I’m so proud of The LEAD Group’s role
within and outside the Lead Campaign of this UN Partnership, that I have done a deep search
to find the last remaining vestige of this historic info at URL:

The PCFV [UN Partnership for Clean
Fuels and Vehicles] has been most
successful in the global elimination of
leaded petrol. In 2002 when the PCFV was
formed, 82 countries were still using
leaded petrol. Today only ONE country is remaining and plans are
underway to also eliminate leaded petrol in this country.
Leaded petrol poisoning has been one of the world’s most serious
environmental health problems, responsible for 90% or more of human
lead exposure. A UNEP-commissioned study (Hatfield, Journal of
Environmental Health, 2011) estimates the benefits of the global
elimination of leaded petrol at over 1.2 million premature deaths avoided
per year, of which 125,000 are children. The overall global benefit of
eliminating leaded petrol adds up to $2.45 trillion per year.
