Knowing your Soil pH or Water pH helps you manage any lead in your herbs and vegetables or your water.
Read below for more details.
Description
Soil pH or Water pH (add-on)
Knowing the pH of your soil or water can help you make informed decisions about your soil and water.
pH 7 is considered neutral. Below 7 is acidic and above 7 is alkaline.
A Water pH below 6.5 may be corrosive (according to NSW EPA’s August 2023 report An investigation into metals in domestic tank water around the Newmont gold mine in Cadia) which means that if your water is even slightly acidic (below 7), lead (and other metals) could leach out of brass taps, ball valves, pumps, lead-soldered pipes or tanks, and lead-flashing on rainwater collection areas and into the water.
Acidic Soil (pH above 7) is known to promote uptake of lead from soil into plants like herbs and vegetables.
What is it?
This is a great add-on when you want to know if your water could be leaching lead from your plumbing or if your soil lead could be being absorbed by your herbs and vegetables.
Steps:
For Water pH:
- Order a Posted Kit and specify water as a sample type and the number of water samples you want to collect; and
- Order the “Soil pH or Water pH” Add-on (this Add-on) and specify it is for Water in the order notes.
For Soil pH:
- If you don’t need to sample Water or Dust Wipes, you can order an Emailed Kit, otherwise you can use one of your Posted Kit samples to test for lead in soil; and
- Order the “Soil pH or Water pH” Add-on (this Add-on) and specify it is for soil in the order notes.
==============================
Our lead test kits are the only ones available in Australia for testing a wide variety of samples at a lab (which charges us a charity rate so you pay less).
You take the samples and send them to Sydney Analytical Labs.
The lab analyses the samples. Then we’ll interpret and explain the results.
